IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT BENEFITS

Please be advised that the Relph-Issued Benny Cards will be turned off effective Tuesday, February 1, 2011 in order for us to get accurate account information in time to switch to the Jaeger and Flynn-issued Flex Debit Card. There will be no active debit cards in use from 2/1/11 – 2/15/11.

Also, Reimbursement requests should be sent to Jaeger and Flynn (no longer Relph) starting the same date. The only items going to the Relph agency after February 1, 2011 are receipts for previous substantiation requests.

Q. Will my FSA/HRA money still be available to me?
A. Yes. You can still get reimbursed for any qualified items purchased during this period. Remember to send reimbursement requests to Jaeger and Flynn as of 2/1/11.

Q. My FSA money expires 2/28/11. Can I get my receipts reimbursed in time?
A. Yes. You have until 4/1/11 to request reimbursement for receipts dated 3/1/10 – 2/28/11.

Fire Safety

This is an Excerpt taken from the Leader-Herald Newspaper:

Community coping with deadly Wells, NY fire
March 24, 2009

“Monday was a cold, clear and crisp early spring day in Wells, and the deafening silence that hung over this picturesque Adirondack town spread to the mouths of many local residents. Not many people were milling along Route 30 on both sides of Lake Algonquin and not many people were talking two days after a tragic blaze destroyed the local Riverview Individual Residential Alternative group home and killed four of the nine developmentally disabled people who lived there. "Everybody around here just can't believe it,"……. "nothing has ever come close" to this tragedy in his years of working with the disabled. …."It was fully engulfed," Towers said. "The sky was orange. It [the home] went very quickly."

I apologize for putting this upsetting thought in the FYI right at Holiday time but I must get your attention.

We have recently discovered that many very caring and well – intentioned employees are struggling with running full fire drills in the bitter cold and bad weather (on all shifts) and they don’t want to take the individuals all the way outside to the “safe area” and make them stay there. I have placed this excerpt into the FYI to provoke thought and understanding as to why we do fire drills and why we must be consistent.

Many unfortunate lessons were learned from the Wells Fire, lessons that can help us prepare ourselves so that we never find ourselves in this awful situation:

1. The fire started in a trash receptacle just outside the screened in porch and although not proven was likely started by a cigarette thrown in the trash as staff “admitted to smoking there even though it was against the rules”.

2. “Late night drills conducted by overnight staff were the least effective and were not done consistently following the appropriate evacuation plans.”

3. Four individuals were safely evacuated, by staff, however; three individuals did not stay at the safe area and went back into the mud room attached to the burning residence. They all died of smoke inhalation. “This demonstrates the very significant challenge present in evacuating individuals who do not have self-preservation skills.” These circumstances were reasonably foreseeable. (The Grand Jury investigation found they “typically exited to the mud room during their routine fire drills”).

4. A fifth resident either fell or sat down on the pavement and wouldn’t move to the safe zone. While staff was assisting this individual the three individuals noted in #3 went back inside.

5. A sixth resident was never evacuated and was found barely alive once the fire was brought under control (nearly two hours after the first alarm).

6. The seventh and eighth residents were rescued by emergency personnel and survived.

7. The ninth resident was found dead in the living room – never evacuated.

• Regularly review the fire evacuation plans. Think through the plan. Check the bedrooms and ask yourself: where are the robes, slippers, and blankets? What stands between the bed and the door/window? Where is the safe zone? If the safe zone is in the van/car is it unlocked or do I have the key on me?

• Please run the drills as if they were real fires. The individuals do not know if it’s just something burning on the stove or a false alarm.

Medical/Dental Open Enrollment Meetings

January 12, 2011 are the mandatory open enrollment meetings for the 3/1/11 - 2/29/12 enrollment year.

We will be transitioning to our new third party benefit administrator, Jaeger and Flynn.

You will have the opportunity to meet your Jaeger and Flynn team and ask questions regarding benefits and the transition.

These meetings are mandatory for all staff who are eligible or will be eligible as of 3/1/11 for medical and dental benefits. These are paid meetings.

Step Up, Dress Down!

During this time office Staff can donate $1.00 per day and wear jeans to work (provided they don’t have meetings with people outside of AIM Services).

All funds raised will go to help ensure a Happy Holiday Season for employees of AIM who may be in need.

A valid NYS Drivers' License acceptable to Agency Insurance standards.
A High School Diploma/GED.
